5K Run to Cure Scleroderma
Sunday June 5, 2011
8:45am
Overpeck Park - Ridgefield Park
Ridgefield Park, NJ
Introduction: On Sunday, June 5, 2011 friends of the Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will participate in the tenth anniversary of Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma – Tri-State Chapter. This Tri-State (NY-NJ-CT) walk/run will create awareness and raise funds to combat scleroderma. Your involvement will help us eradicate this crippling and deadly disease.

We hope that we can count on your support!
The Benefit: The reason for the 5K is to help raise funds to combat scleroderma (a chronic autoimmune disease causing a hardening of the body’s connective tissue with no known cause or cure which can be a painful, life altering disease that is fatal in its most severe form and can come and go unpredictably.) The 5K will also expand the awareness of both the disease and the Scleroderma Foundation to hundreds of additional people.

The funds raised will help the Tri-State Chapter (1) better assist patients and caregivers understand the disease and cope with its affects; (2) provide free education forums for people to come and discuss new research, medications and treatments; (3) continue to funds 15 active support groups where people can share their personal experiences to better understand the disease on the patient and caregiver level and; (4) allow additional funds to be contributed for research.
Location -Ridgefield Park Area (Overpeck Park): Welcome to the new Overpeck County Park. The vision to turn what was once a landfill into a beautiful park to be enjoyed by thousands of people is now a reality. More than 50 years ago, five Bergen County municipalities - Englewood, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park and Teaneck - donated hundreds of acres of land to the County of Bergen with the intention of creating a central commons for art, sports and other leisure activities. The 154-acre site in Ridgefield Park is the last portion of the park to be completed.

In redeveloping the land, not only did the County of Bergen create open space, it also cleaned up an environmental hazard. Now that the landfill has been capped, residents in the surrounding communities can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the land is finally safe and that the Overpeck Creek and the Hackensack River are protected from further pollution. The park is sure to become a recreational destination and those who visit will reap the benefits of the land's dramatic transformation from brownfields to greenfields.

The Bergen County Department of Parks hopes that you and your family enjoy the new Overpeck County Park and take advantage of all it has to offer. The park, which is ADA accessible, includes the following amenities:

Children's playground
